Dermatologists are sending out the alarm: the number of cases of irreversible damage to the skin linked to the sun is constantly rising. The damage is principally due to the combined action of UVA and UVB rays. The excess of UVB, primarily responsible for sunburn and also UVA, which accounts for 90% of harmful UV rays, penetrate deeply and can cause intolerance reactions and irreversible changes in DNA. Ultra sun protection with textures to suit every skin type.

• 7 out of 10 women improperly protect their skin under the Sun.

• 59% have dangerous behaviour under the sun.

o An even riskier behaviour with children: 92% of people with risky behaviour have even riskier behaviour with their children less than 12 years.

• More than 50% of women have brown spots, especially Asian women (66%).

• Among sun fears, Asian women are mainly concerned by darkening effects (83%).

• Asian women are also concerned by premature skin ageing (39%), getting sunburns (32%) and acne breakout (31%).

Capital Soleil Hydra-Milk (Intolerant Skin) SPF 50+ , 100 ml, MRP Rs 1350

Dermatologists are sending out the alarm: the number of cases of irreversible damage to the skin linked to the sun is constantly rising. The damage is principally due to the combined action of UVA and UVB rays. The excess of UVB, primarily responsible for tanning / sunburn and also UVA, which accounts for 90% of harmful UV rays, penetrate deeply and can cause sun related allergies and irreversible changes in DNA.

As per Dr Raj Parikh, a practicing dermatologist and consultant to Vichy:

“The incidence of the Sun related damage to the skin in India has been increasing over the past few years. Sun related allergies called as PLE (Polymorphous light eruptions) which is usually caused by UVA radiation are now more commonly seen.

Too much Sun, too often on too little protected skin – It’s a public health issue.”

Understanding UV rays and their effects

Today we all know that UV rays are harmful to all skin types. There are 3 types of UV rays:

UVA rays

• Comprise 95% of radiation that reaches the earth

• Are responsible for aging your skin as well as causing several forms of cancer

• Sun related allergies are usually caused by UVA radiation

• They are on earth all year long, in winter and in summer. Their levels do not vary a lot contrary to UVB which are more present in summer.

• They even penetrate through glass windows!

UVB rays

• Make up 5% of rays

• Are responsible for skin darkening, sun burns.

• They also cause some types of cancer

UVC rays

• Are the most dangerous UV rays.

• Fortunately these rays are normally blocked by the ozone layer

Protecting the skin from sunburn (UVB) is not enough.

The effects of UVA are just as dangerous. Contrary to UVBs that are principally responsible for tanning / sunburn, UVAs do not trigger a visible warning signal. They penetrate more deeply within the skin and thus damage cells in the dermis. They are responsible for premature skin ageing and increase the long term risks of sun allergies and skin cancers.

It is hence important for a sunscreen to ensure double protection from both UVB & UVA rays. SPF is the measure of protection from UVB rays. Look for a sign on the pack which also shows UVA protection. The European Commission has published a recommendation on the efficacy and the labeling of sun care products. This recommendation states that the UVA protection level should be at least 1/3 of the UVB protection level (SPF). This logo – displayed on products ensures protection which conforms to the recommendation.

Dr Jaishree Sharad, a leading cosmetic dermatologist says:

“ Apart from sun induced allergies, premature aging due to photodamage by UVA is of prime concern among people. Pigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles , freckles and lentigines are on the rise at an early age and can bring down the confidence of the individual significantly. Thus, it is important to realise the need of a good sunblock with both UVA and UVB protective spectrum. Mexoryl XL filtering system meets this challenge successfully.

Thanks to the Mexoryl XL filtering system, CAPITAL SOLEIL sun care products from Vichy Laboratories cover a wide spectrum of UVA and UVB rays to guarantee optimal protection.

To summarize the effects of UV rays:

• UVB rays, at the origin of tanning, are also responsible for sunburns

• UVA rays, that penetrate deeper into skin, accelerate skin ageing

• UVB and UVA rays can cause skin allergies, pigmentary disorders, and even lead to risk of skin cancers on the long term

Safe Sun behaviour

1- Avoid exposure between 11am and 4pm. Seek shade all-day long.

2- Wear appropriate garments, including sunglasses and hat. Be careful, sun care products stain garments.

3- Keep babies and children under 3y-o out of direct sunlight. Young skins are fragile.

4- Apply sunscreen every 2 hours. Reapply after swimming, perspiring or towelling.

To dispel common misconceptions, Dr. Vichy answers your questions.

With a T-shirt, sunglasses and a hat, my child is completely protected from the sun.

FALSE. The application of a sun care product is still necessary because not all UV rays are totally filtered out by clothes, and certain areas remain unprotected (ears, neck, backs of the knees). Using a sun care treatment guarantees a more complete protection.

There is no difference between children’s and adults’ sun protection products.

FALSE. Protection creams for children are tested on sensitive skin and under paediatric supervision. In addition, their texture, visible on application, ensures no areas of the skin are missed.

The stronger the protection factor, the less frequently I need to reapply sun cream to my child.

FALSE. With swimming, sand, perspiration and towel drying it is vital to reapply sun cream frequently to guarantee optimal protection.

Did you know? The European Commission has published a recommendation on the efficacy and the labelling of sun care products. This recommendation states that the UVA protection level should be at least 1/3 of the UVB protection level (SPF). This logo – displayed on products ensures protection which conforms to the recommendation.

Sun protection can be fun!

The shadow game

Teach your child about the most dangerous sunshine hours. Whilst standing in the sun with the child, evaluate the size of your shadows. If the shadows are shorter than you, it means the sun is very high in the sky and UV intensity is strong. It is therefore important to cover-up & stay in the shade. When the shadow is longer than the person, it is safer to spend time outside after applying a sunscreen.

The little soldier game

Show your child the items that will help protect him/her form the sun. Before going outdoors, check with your child that his/her essential soldier’s kit is complete: hat, sunglasses and sun cream.
